2008

Iowa LiDAR Workshop – October 6, 2008

In the fall of 2008, the center conducted the Eastern Iowa GIS Day Conference on October 6-7, 2008. A LiDAR workshop was held on October 6th in the GIS lab on the University of Northern Iowa campus. Participants spent the day learning about LiDAR and its applications. LiDAR, light detection and ranging, is a new technology offering high-resolution topographic data. Special guest speakers included Gary Thompson, North Carolina Geodetic Survey, and Jim Giglierano, Iowa DNR. Research Associate John DeGroote gave a presentation during this event. More than 25 registrants attended this program.

Advanced LiDAR Workshop - August 7-8, 2007

A two-day workshop on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) was presented by UNI’s GeoTREE Center and attended by approximately 50 participants. The workshop combined hands-on data processing activities working with Iowa LiDAR data and presentations from visiting LiDAR experts from the public, academic, and private sectors. Iowa is one of the first states in the country collecting a state-wide LiDAR dataset. LiDAR provides detailed elevation data on the bare surface of the earth as well as buildings and vegetation. This data is extremely useful for environmental, transportation, and planning applications. The first day of the workshop introduced participants to various methods for processing Iowa LiDAR data. Participants were impressed by tools developed by GeoTREE staff specifically for helping Iowa agencies efficiently manage the Iowa LiDAR data. These tools include a web-based ArcGIS server application for interactively selecting and downloading LiDAR data and a customized ArcGIS toolset for processing raw LiDAR data into useful products. On the second day of the workshop, LiDAR experts from the US Geological Survey (USGS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the University of Alberta, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and from private companies provided a useful overview of LiDAR concepts, data processing techniques, and the specific status of the Iowa LiDAR data project. Workshop participants enjoyed the presentations and there were significant questions and answer periods between the participants and the presenters.

2006

Remote Sensing Data into GIS

This workshop focused on how to view, analyze, and integrate raster data, particularly air-borne and satellite remote sensing data, into GIS.

2005

  1. Iowa-NASA Environmental Data Challenge Workshop

This workshop explored the creation of new partnerships between environmental data producers/users in Iowa and NASA, by the merging of four key areas of geospatial technology i.e. data collection, storage, modeling and visualization.

  2. Satellite Remote Sensing to GIS: NASA Data Integration Workshop Follow-on #2

This workshop assisted GIS users a simple, hands-on introduction to downloading freely available remote sensing data, loading it into a GIS, and performing simple enhancements and interpretations. Target users were natural resource, land management and environmental mangers.

2003

Three workshops were conducted in the summer of 2003. Studies in Weather Analysis and Forecasting for Science Educators included a GIS/remote sensing component providing an general introduction to GIS as well as the use of GIS in meteorological data analysis.

2002

  1. Color Infrared (CIR) Image Interpretation was held to address the widespread interest in Iowa's 2002 state-wide color infrared aerial photography. The workshop included basic principles of remote sensing and specific applications of the CIR data product.
  2. Introduction to Internet based GIS using ArcIMS provided participants with general information about Internet-based GIS technologies and some hands-on time with a basic ArcIMS project.
